Davis by-election victory "The beginning of the end for Big Brother Britain" - MP

North Thanet`s MP, Roger Gale has this (Friday 11th July) morning described David Davis` overwhelming victory in the Haltemprice and Howden by-election as "the beginning of the end for Big Brother Britain" and "a stunning first shot in the fightback for individual freedoms".

Speaking after campaigning in the East Yorkshire constituency the MP said:

"We must not allow the Westminter Village and the chattering classes to ignore the significance of what has been achieved tonight by one very brave man who has been prepared to stand up for a fundamental principle.  This result is certainly not the end of the campaign. It is simply the beginning of what is likely to be a long struggle to wrest back the freedom of the individual from pernicious government that has by stealth extended the powers of the State into far to many areas of our lives.

In just a few weeks the lie has been given to those who saw David`s resignation as foolhardy and vainglorious. The commentators may not like it but the fact is that public support of 69% gfor six weeks` detention without trial has melted into 61% opposition with just 36% still saying that they support this government`s position. That should send a very clear message to Westminster that there is no mandate for the government to use the Parliament Act to try to force through that erodes the provisions of Habeas Corpus and Magna Carta.

Now those of us who have supported this endeavour have to work to turn what the voters of Haltemprice and Howden have achieved into a national movement against Big Government and intrusion. We must not allow this one battle to obscure the bigger war which is to be fought for the very soul of what has made Britain great - our individual freedom.  It is a cause worth fighting for. "
