Gale attends sight loss awareness training  20th July 2015

North Thanet`s MP, Sir Roger Gale, has attended an RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind People) sight loss awareness training session in Parliament.

The event was a chance for MPs to increase their awareness of sight loss issues and focused, in particular, on meeting the communication needs of their blind and partially sighted constituents.

During the session, attendees improved their understanding of eye conditions, and of alternative formats (such as Braille, large print and audio), and learnt how to guide. They also discussed what they’d need to consider when meeting blind and partially sighted constituents at a surgery appointment (such as the availability of public transport for travelling to the meeting, and the accessibility of the building in which the meeting is being held).

Sir Roger said: “This training session has proved to be an opportunity to learn a very great deal about sight loss, and the challenges facing blind and partially-sighted people, in a very short time”

Helen Dearman, Parliamentary Manager at RNIB, said: "We’re very pleased that the training session was such a success. Sight loss awareness is so important and it's vital that MPs meet the needs of their blind and partially sighted constituents."
